SIOANI, the System for the Investigation of Unidentified Aerial Objects, was created by the FAB (Brazilian Air Force) under the responsibility of the 4th Comar (Air Force Command in the 4th Air Zone), in São Paulo, and operated for only three years, from 1969 to 1972.
Despite the short period in which it was active, SIOANI investigated several cases of UFOs, with dispatch of teams to the places of occurrences.
The official UFO investigation agency in Brazil even produced two official bulletins, classified as secret and produced only for internal circulation among the intelligence agencies of the military government during its existence.
The first dated March 1, 1969, established the creation of the agency and detailed its objectives and protocols.
In the second dated August 2, 1969, about 70 cases involving UFOs under investigation by SIOANI are listed.
The bulletin brings the list of cases accompanied by free drawings by the investigators on the possible shape and characteristics of the UFOs present on the list.
In an unclear way, the SIOANI was deactivated in 1972, shortly after the change of command in the 4th Comar.
The process of closing the agency is not documented in the FAB’s collection available for consultation at the National Archives.
After the end of SIOANI, its entire collection was sent to the archives of the Air Force Aerospace Command and, according to the FAB, after that there was never again a specific department in charge of investigating UFO cases and reports.
